In todays video, we explored a school near Hazard Kentucky that was directly hit by the 2022 Eastern Kentucky Floods…..and what a tragic and emotional experience it was. The flooding had completely ravaged the school and it most likely will be a total loss. The elementary school itself was an eerie post apocalyptic experience. Many of the walls and ceilings had shifted and collapsed inside both classrooms and hallways. The swift rising current dragged and moved heavy furnishings, equipment, and supplies all over the interior, blocking many hallways. The remaining water, dirt, mud, and of course sewage sat stagnant across the entire buildings interior floor, making navigating this place nearly impossible. So it was for these reasons that our explore of the elementary school was limited.
Nobody would have imagined that less than 8 months after devastating tornadoes caused a state of emergency and re-wrote the record books throughout western Kentucky , another catastrophic rainstorm would slam the state of Kentucky. By the time it was all over, the records books would again have to be rewritten with this “1 in 1000 year flooding.” The rainstorm struck Eastern Kentucky on July 26, 2022 and would go on to dump more than 16 inches of rain water over the next few days.
When it was all said and done, thousands of homes were completely destroyed, many swept right from their foundation, and most tragically 40 people lost their lives. As we left the flooded elementary school and headed back, we continued to think of the people. As it will take many years to rebuild the areas impacted by these atrocious floods, our hearts and prayers go out to all the people effected by them.
