Abandoned Funeral Home Full of Caskets

September 25, 2022

This abandoned funeral home dates back to 1970 when it first opened its doors as a small family owned and operated mortuary. The funeral homes owner had a stellar and creditable reputation in the local area, which certainly helped the business to grow into one of the most premier funeral homes located throughout the entire state.

Unfortunately the funeral home permanently closed in 2006 just prior to the beloved owner passing away. Exploring this abandoned funeral home was way more of a challenge than i had expected. It was located in a rough, wild, and dangerous neighborhood with people everywhere so getting into the funeral home took over an hour as i was approached several different times by nosey neighbors curious to what it was that I was doing.

It basically came down to the option of either taking the risk and go explore it or miss out on the opportunity. And i obviously made the right choice as the funeral home turned out to be amazing. There were lots of stuff left behind, most notably the caskets, the gurneys, the embalming tools, the obituaries, and even the old school baby blue Cadillac hearse. With it also being pretty rare to find all of that left behind, thankfully it all worked out in the end and i accomplished the mission of exploring this incredible abandoned funeral home.

We hope that everyone enjoyed this abandoned funeral home video. It was definitely an anxiety ridden experience but also a helluva location to explore. Exploring Abandoned Military Hospital

September 18, 2022

In this video were gonna take you along with us to explore inside an abandoned military hospital that has some rather compelling history. The hospital opened its doors back in 1909. The majority of the cost coming from appropriated funds set aside by Congress after seeing the yellow fever epidemic cripple American soldiers as they returned from their overseas deployment.

Since opening in 1909, the hospital went on to treat hundreds of thousands American soldiers, as well as various high ranking politicians and elected officials. The hospital was also where physicians, nurses, corpsmen, and field medics were trained in military aid and health care. The hospital was in operation for more than 100 years before it finally closed its doors in 2011.

The hospital property itself almost looks like a college campus, with over 100 acres and twenty something buildings lining a wide sloping grassy landscape. The multiple buildings on the property contain pretty much any thing and everything that one would need to be treated for medical reasons, as well as research, training, education, recreation, housing, administration, and much more. Located along tall oak tree lined pathways, sits an old, brick structure with massive stone columns and arched entryways. This was the one abandoned hospital building that we were able to explore. From what we have been able to research and gather, it seems that this building would have been the medical and research facility.

The medical and research facility was a super unique explore. The building was massive, historic, and had a lot of old outdated equipment leftover. Located within The building were several operating rooms, an radiology room, an auditorium, and multiple laboratories used for medical research. With this building being abandoned and neglected for over 10 years, you could really see the deterioration and natural decay throughout.

As of 2022, the hospital campus, including the research and medical building, were sold off are currently being developed into mixed use development for residential retail and commercial space. Abandoned Mansion of a Wealthy Italian Family

September 15, 2022

This once luxurious mansion now sits abandoned, isolated and deserted, behind an old crumbing facade, in a small village in rural Italy. The home has long been neglected and seemingly forgotten about, but often times these places hold the mysteries of what happened and why it became abandoned. The villa, referred to as the golden villa, was no different.

It dates back to the early 1800s and was busting with energy and life for most of its existence. The last family to live in the majestic manor were wealthy and influential, however approximately, 20 years ago that family seemed to have vanished with all of their belongings and possessions left behind

Exploring this time capsule was both unbelievable and incredible, as the entire property was loaded with everything and anything the family would have needed to live day to day. Throughout the entire time we were Exploring The villa, we couldn’t help but to think of where the family could be and most importantly, why did they leave all of their stuff behind. Once we made our way inside, the abandoned villa sure didn’t disappoint as we were all completely taken back by just how gorgeous and intact the home really was.

The interior decor was a sheer contrast to the plain mundane exterior of the villa. The rooms inside of the golden villa were phenomenal, certainly living up to its nickname. The main floor featured a beautiful living room with vintage and antique furniture, a collapsing fireplace, and a hand-painted fresco covered the entire ceiling.

The bedrooms were all just as impressive, as they still had the ornate wooden beds, hand-carved armoirs, paintings and portraits still hanging, and other personal items scattered about. After exploring and spending a couple hours sifting through the families various documents, slides, photographs, and paperwork, we felt that the villa was largely abandoned because the family children had all grown up and had moved on with their lives, and the last person living at the golden villa eventually passed away, leading to its current state of disrepair.

Italy’s golden villa was a one of those locations that reinforce why we love to explore. It had the history, it had the architecture, it had the beauty, it had the decay, it had the time capsule, and it had the mission that we had to commit to in order for us to get inside to document this gorgeous home. Abandoned Italian Palace - Paradise By The Sea

September 4, 2022

Often referred by the locals as the paradise by the sea, this Custom designed structure was a 5-story gem built by a famous local Italian architect. An elevated plot of land that overlooked the promenade of an Italian city shoreline was specifically chosen to be the location of this new gorgeous municipal palace.

Construction was finished in 1924 and it instantly became the talk of the town, especially as it’s semi-circular base with giant skylight windows, it’s numerous wrought iron railings, two twin spiked copulas, and it’s noticeable number of marble statues standing guard truly set its appeal far apart from anything else. For most of its time, the palace was the pride and joy of the Roman city as people came from all over the country to gawk at its absolute splendor.

The palace was originally designed to house a casino however that never happened. Rather it became famous for hosting large gatherings, parties, shows, venues, and other prominent events. But by the 1960s the palace had become a vocational school for the hotel and catering industry. The school officially closed in 2015 and the magnificent paradise by the sea has been abandoned ever since, surprisingly decaying and rotting away on an exquisite Italian coastline.

Exploring the palace was just as amazing as we had imagined. The interior was loaded with significant architectural detailing, such as hand painted frescas, glass Chandeliers, golden sea themed plaster work, and most notably was the circular domed room with high rising windows on the very top floor. There were elegant dining halls, a dazzling ballroom, a stylish modern bar, and various classrooms located throughout the impressive structure.

Abandoned Villa And Sewing Factory In Italy

August 28, 2022

This abandoned cotton mill was an amazing and quite educational explore to start off our Abandoned Italy Series. This Series will consist of 8 videos back to back from Italy. Series 2 from Italy will pick back up in early 2023.

As we all learned a thing or two about the way cotton is made and produced while we explored and researched the location. it was built in 1930 and was one of the largest cotton mills in that area. It was a massive location with multiple buildings, but the main buildings were the actual cotton factory and the villa. The owners of the cotton mill most likely lived in the Villa so they could be close to their business and they could keep an eye on their 500 or so employees.

The villa was a gem of an explore; loaded with antique furnishings, such as a grand piano, a mirrored and mural’d bench, hand-carved wooden beds, and decorative armoires. The cotton factory closed down in 1990 after the owner failed to comply with newer and more modern safety regulations. It has been abandoned ever since with much of the various cotton products; such as handkerchiefs napkins sheets towels clothing and tablecloth‘s, where all left behind.

Exploring Abandoned School Destroyed By the 2022 Flood

August 21, 2022

In todays video, we explored a school near Hazard Kentucky that was directly hit by the 2022 Eastern Kentucky Floods…..and what a tragic and emotional experience it was. The flooding had completely ravaged the school and it most likely will be a total loss. The elementary school itself was an eerie post apocalyptic experience. Many of the walls and ceilings had shifted and collapsed inside both classrooms and hallways. The swift rising current dragged and moved heavy furnishings, equipment, and supplies all over the interior, blocking many hallways. The remaining water, dirt, mud, and of course sewage sat stagnant across the entire buildings interior floor, making navigating this place nearly impossible. So it was for these reasons that our explore of the elementary school was limited.

Nobody would have imagined that less than 8 months after devastating tornadoes caused a state of emergency and re-wrote the record books throughout western Kentucky , another catastrophic rainstorm would slam the state of Kentucky. By the time it was all over, the records books would again have to be rewritten with this “1 in 1000 year flooding.” The rainstorm struck Eastern Kentucky on July 26, 2022 and would go on to dump more than 16 inches of rain water over the next few days.

When it was all said and done, thousands of homes were completely destroyed, many swept right from their foundation, and most tragically 40 people lost their lives. As we left the flooded elementary school and headed back, we continued to think of the people. As it will take many years to rebuild the areas impacted by these atrocious floods, our hearts and prayers go out to all the people effected by them. For more photos from this flooded school as well as many other locations, go to abandonedcentral.com. And don’t forget to subscribe to abandoned Central on YouTube so you don’t miss any videos! Thank you! A Big Shout Out to @unhurd For This Flooded School.

Exploring Whats Left Inside Abandoned Catholic School

August 14, 2022

This abandoned parochial school was quite a discovery for us. The property is very active and only the school sits abandoned. The school was built back in 1922 to accommodate the influx of religious people moving into the area; many wanting their children to be educated under the Christian umbrella. The school was built to hold students from grades kindergarten through 12th grade, with both money from the church as well as private donations. By the 1950’s the school was In its heyday and had nearly 2,000 pupils at that time. It continued to operate at near student capacity for many years.

In the 1990’s, the school began to change. Due to declining enrollment within many parochial schools in the 90’s, the student body population started to decrease more and more each year. In 1995, the graduating class had drastically dropped to only a couple hundred students. This left the administration and faculty with no other choice but to permanently close the school. Unfortunately, Protests from the school administration, parents, students, and even some residents of the local community - all fell on deaf ears.

After closing the school in the 1990’s, it seems that a lot of the school stuff was just all left behind. Most notable were some of the classrooms still had desks, chairs, and even some textbooks. The library was also largely untouched and nearly every book shelf was lined with books; each section referenced and categorized. And that is one of the main reasons that this location was such an incredible explore. It’s certainly not everyday that we get to explore such a location with history and all that was left for us to discover.

Abandoned Funeral Home Left Caskets and Hearse

July 31, 2022

This abandoned funeral home dates back to the early 1960’s when it was one of two funeral homes in the area at that time. Over the years, several other funeral homes opened up in the area, which increased the local competition. Eventually the owner began to have health problems, so that coupled with all the competition, he could hardly keep the business afloat and decided to close the funeral home in 2008. The owner also put it up for sale and it seems that it did sell and in fact it sold to one of the once competing funeral homes in the same area. It remains unclear as to why the new owners haven’t done anything with the vacant property or anything inside of it. This amazing abandoned funeral home featured the embalming room, the casket display room, a large chapel, two visitation rooms, and a couple offices. This abandoned funeral home left a lot stuff behind. The place was an incredible explore because of everything that they did leave behind, including death records and nearly a half dozen caskets. As of 2022, the funeral home still sits abandoned. That takes us to the end of todays video. We truly appreciate you all checking it out. For more photos from this abandoned medical center as well as many other locations, go to abandonedcentral.com. Abandoned Prison Closed After Violent Reputation

June 5, 2022

In todays video we will be taking you with us as we explore an infamous abandoned juvenile detention center with a long documented history of inmate abuse, extreme violence, and it even had a few riots in its heyday. The juvenile detention center was built in 1960 on 55-acre valley site. When it opened in 1960, it was the first correctional institution constructed specifically to house and accommodate those sentenced under the new and somewhat controversial Federal Youth Corrections Act of 1950.

The Federal Youth Corrections Act of 1950 was enacted by Congress and targeted young offenders, both men and women, between the ages of 18 and 22. The aim was to segregate them from more hardened adult offenders and to rehabilitate them through intensive programs and a mandatory period of parole supervision, in other words, giving the young offenders a second chance at redemption. The juvenile detention center did house young prisoners, both male and female, from adolescent until the age of 22. Once the prisoners reached age 22, they were then shipped out to the more notorious adult prisons in the area.

The design and layout of the juvenile detention center was unlike the design of most of the previous facilities built by the correctional departments. More like a college campus setting, it allowed the offenders to roam freely and give them a sense of freedom of movement, which was meant to deter both aggression and violence. The young inmates were also provided academic and vocational educational opportunities, as well as professional counseling and mentorship guidance. Each l inmate also had their own room, where they could work, study, and sleep in a private setting.

With this idea and initiative of less confinement and restrictions, with so much freedom and flexibility, the juvenile detention center pretty much had major problems right from the The juvenile detention center had such a bad name and violent reputation that state officials had no choice but to officially close the notorious juvenile facility in 2003. Within years of it’s closure, the juvenile center's buildings began to fall into dangerous stages of both disrepair and decay, with several buildings even collapsing during that time.

Finally in 2011, approximately 8 years after it closed, it would become the new home for local firefighters, law enforcement, and rescue crews that would utilize the abandoned facility for training and rescue purposes. This is the main reason as to why you see a helicopter crashed into one of the rooftops, as well as many other simulated vehicles crashes and rescue missions set up to practice real life rescue scenarios.

As of 2022, many local rescue workers, law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics and first responders continue to utilize the once infamous juvenile center to practice real-life search and rescue scenarios.

Abandoned Psych Hospital For The Criminally Insane

June 5, 2022

This video takes us inside a partially abandoned state psych and forensic hospital that opened its doors way back in 1879. Becca and I explored this hospital and filmed this video back in 2017. We always wanted to go back and reshoot this video but we never got to do so before she passed away. The approximately 143 year-old hospital had an enclosed campus type setting, measured at over 200 acres, and consisted of over 60 different buildings and structures, with the majority of them still remaining active for its original intention. The hospitals buildings were constructed in the "cottage" model, with separate structures built above ground and interconnected by a series of underground tunnels. This model allowed patients to be separated and treated according to their level of stability and functionality.

The hospital treated both men and women with a vast array and variety of different mental health conditions. Throughout the 1900’s the hospital admitted around 2,500 patients every year. Most of the mentally ill patients lived in dormitory buildings, with each room holding two persons. If a patient was higher functioning and stable on their medications, then they were awarded much more recreation opportunity, social interaction, and overall flexibility than the other patients. These “higher level” functioning patients were able to partake in occupation and recreation within the areas of the hospital.

Some patients were voluntarily committed, but many patients were also criminally insane. In other words, this meant that the hospital did have a large population of patients that had committed serious crimes, such as murder, rape, and even cannibalism. These type of patients were separated from the others and were forced to live in much harsher conditions. There is both proof and documentation that the patients were treated much different; often being abused in any way imaginable, neglected, punished, and were even used as Guinness pigs. They were often restrained for long periods of time, used to perform new surgical operations, experimented on with different medications and injections, and even used for all types of unconsented patient experimentations. From the initial early years through the 1940s, the hospital was certainly not immune to the same horrific experiences, conditions, and treatments that most of the other state psychiatric hospitals had.

Many of the now considered barbaric forms of mental health treatment, took place at the hospital. Although some of these same types of treatments are still being used today, back then the patients were not given choice, they were often sedated, assaulted and restrained…..and many made comparisons that drew parallels to human torture. Some of these atrocious treatments that patients underwent at the hospital included electro shock therapy, insulin coma therapy, and lobotomies. In the 1950s and 1960s, much needed advancements in the treatment and care of the mentally ill began to take transform many of the psychiatric hospitals, including this one. As the primary focus began to shift to anti-psychotic medications, patient education, training, and more outpatient modalities, the hospital made significant improvement and soon became a model institution in the treatment and care of the mentally ill, especially within the criminally insane unit. Modern Medications were said to have been the real difference maker, as they were able to help control and lessen the severity of many of the symptoms and behaviors associated with mental illness.

In addition to the growth in pharmacology, the hospital also implemented Specialized treatment units for substance abuse, social rehabilitation, geriatrics, adolescents, and forensics. There was a major emphasis on social and vocational rehabilitation to prepare patients for eventual community re-entry. By the new millennium, the psychiatric hospital had largely proven itself to be the new standard of care - leaving most of its tragic and awful history behind. At this time, the future of this partially abandoned state psychiatric hospital is grim. After already closing down several of the other programs and buildings in recent years, many hospital staff, leaders, lobbyists, and stakeholders are pushing to build a brand new modern state of the art forensic psychiatric hospital nearby. This would most certainly be the final straw for the already aging and deteriorating hospital. Only time will tell what happens to this controversial state hospital. Giant Surgical Hospital Left Abandoned After Closing

June 5, 2022

The history of this abandoned surgical hospital dates back to when it first opened its doors in 1969. The hospital was a large multi-story building that specialized in surgery for the treatment of pain management. It seems that the hospital closed sometime around 2019. The hospital was loaded with much of the equipment and supplies left behind. The hospital still had surgical suites, operating rooms, examination rooms, research laboratories, optometry chairs, and dental chairs all left behind. An interesting discovery from this abandoned hospital was when we came across a room completely filled from floor to ceiling with boxes full of malpractice subpoena records for various court cases. It really made us wonder if this place closed because of the financial problems due to all of these medical malpractice lawsuits, but we could not find any actual proof of this. Well that will do it for this video of an abandoned hospital. Hopefully you all enjoyed the video. It was a rather sketchy explore as we didn’t have any Intel or information, because we were the very first people to explore the location. Please subscribe to Abandoned Central so that you don’t miss any of our other videos. Thank you so much for all the continued support!

Huge Abandoned Teaching Hospital - Found The Morgue

May 23, 2022

In todays video we will be taking you inside this 200,000 square foot monster of an abandoned hospital that was last used as an educational hospital. The origins of the hospital date back to the 1880’s when it first opened as a Hospital for the various railroad workers and coal miners that lived and worked in the local area. These laborers continually hurt themselves while working the notoriously harsh conditions often associated with the grueling jobs. These workers routinely injured themselves and in many cases, workers lost their limbs, and in several cases lost their lives, as it was a couple hours trip to the only hospital in the area. The local leaders and state officials saw this as a great opportunity to fund and build an obviously much needed hospital in that area. They figured that the sight of mangled and dying railroad workers and miners was bad for the business aspect of the work. The leaders and officials provided money for both the purchase of the land and the construction of the hospital and helped to fund the hospital after its opening. The mining and railroad bosses, likewise, contributed money to the hospital to help reassure their hard working employees that they could be properly and quickly treated in the event of an accident and/or injury.

During its first decades of operation, the hospital had a constant stream and influx of aging, older men struggling to breath due to the ravages of black lung. For those of you that might not know about black lung, it was an awful and painful respiratory condition caused by overexposure to deadly coal dust often found deep in the mines. Many miners worked long days and for years at a time, causing them to breathe in the toxic dust, which would then scar the lungs, impairing and limiting the ability to breathe.

The consistent hospital admissions and medical treatment for these conditions eventually caused a shift within the hospital. The hospital doctors and physicians soon began to educate and teach other health professionals how to treat and care for these specialty cases of black lung and the other various diseases caused by the brutal work conditions of the miners and railroad workers. By the 1960’s the hospital had outgrown its original building and a new massive 6-story tall structure soon took its place. This new hospital would primarily focus on educating and training students and residents, as well as the other health professionals. The hospital went on to train thousands of doctors and nurses, both women and men, many of whom went on to have life-long careers in the medical field.

Although the hospital was quite successful in both treating and caring for patients, as well as teaching and training many medical professionals, the Great Recession of 2008 would eventually take its toll on the hospitals financial stability. After failing to secure a lucrative partnership and a financial bail out, the hospital was in serious trouble. In 2012, the near 130 year-old hospital was left with no other choice but to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy, close the doors, and liquidate all the hospitals assets. As of 2022, the former hospital still sits abandoned, but there has been some push from the local community to sell the old deteriorating hospital and at least reuse the nearly 20 acres of rolling landscape that surrounds the place.

Abandoned Funeral Home With Hearse And Caskets

April 23, 2022

This abandoned funeral dates back first opened its doors in 1989. The nearly 4,000 square foot funeral home featured a large embalming room, a small visitation room, a cozy little chapel, and a casket display room. The funeral home was quite successful during its years of operation, mainly as it was just one of three funeral homes in the area. It also certainly helped that the owner was very well known and respected in the local community, as he was a one-time politician and had even fought for Civil Rights in the early 1960s, most notably right along side with Martin Luther King Jr. And just like his Comrade, MLK, The owner of the funeral home was also a reverend as well as the funeral director, which can be common with the smaller family-run funeral homes. When the owner and funeral director’s health problems began to plague him, he knew that it was a matter of time before he wouldn’t be able to continue to perform funerals and service families and loved ones. By 2017, the funeral home had permanently closed and was put up for sale. As of 2022, the one time successful funeral home still sits abandoned in hopes that someone will save it.

Abandoned Asylum With Tragic History of Patient Abuse

April 10, 2022

This abandoned asylum is well known for its tragic history of patient abuse. Letchworth Village opened its doors in 1911 in the small, quaint town of Thiells, New York. It was built for physically and mentally disabled persons of all ages, from newborn to the elderly. The campus of Letchworth Village consisted of over 130 different buildings and measured at approximately 2,000 acres, solidifying its name as an actual “village” and giving truth to its one time motto of “an acre for every patient.” It was named after William Pryor Letchworth, who sought reform in the early treatment and care for the insane, epileptic, and poor children. The sprawling complex was originally created as a home for “the segregation of the epileptic and feeble-minded.”

The town of Thiells, New York was chosen specifically because of its location; as it was pretty much a stones throw from the scenic Hudson River, it was only 40 miles north of the populous New York City, and it offered plenty of breathtaking landscape, with rolling hills and vast farm land where the mentally ill could find both peace and serenity while in a beautiful and welcoming atmosphere.

From its opening in 1911 through the heydays of the 1920’s, the able-bodies tended to the farms, they worked in small shops, there was a hospital, several administration buildings, a recreation building, a power plant, and several places of worship where the patients could both work and attend services. Most of the other buildings were patient dormitories that were mostly single-story, designed and subdivided to house up to 70 residents per building.

In 1972, Geraldo took millions of TV viewers inside Letchworth Village as part of his unflinching, award-winning expose "Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace” Although the expose largely focused on the conditions inside of Willowbrook State School, another institution with a similar situation, some of the content was also from Letchworth Village.

Letchworth Village was officially closed down in 1996. The remaining patients were moved to more up-to-date modern facilities throughout the state where they could be better cared for. Many people who worked at the Village refuse to speak of their experiences and to the ghastly first hand accounts of what they had witnessed. A interesting fact is that Letchworth Village seemed to follow a trajectory: from “noble-facility-for-healing,” to “abusive-human-rights-horror-show,” to the now “haunting-ruins” that you see today.

Abandoned Jail And Courthouse Destroyed By Tornado

April 2, 2022

On the Evening of December 10th 2021, the marvelous, mighty, and majestic graves county courthouse was decimated after a deadly tornado ripped through the City of Mayfield, Kentucky and destroyed everything in its path. The Graves County Courthouse was built in 1888 and was located in the town square of Mayfield, Kentucky. The courthouse had served the people of both Mayfield and Graves County Kentucky for over 133 years before a devastating tornado ripped through the heart of Mayfield on December 10th 2021.

The courthouse was a grand Victorian beauty that was designed by noted architects, the McDonald Brothers, who were from nearby Louisville and had also designed many of the other gorgeous historic courthouses around Kentucky. The Graves County Courthouse was quite special as its architectural style was mostly Queen Anne Victorian, but also featured Italianate elements throughout. It also had a notable red-brick exterior and a prominent octagonal clock tower rising to steep-tiered roof. The famous clock tower soared high above downtown Mayfield for all those years, until that was toppled over by the destructive 2021 tornado winds that reached nearly 200 miles an hour. Although the courthouse suffered catastrophic damage, both exterior and interior, we were able to explore and document most of it.

The deadly tornado that wrecked most of Mayfield, Kentucky certainly didn’t spare the courthouse as it most likely will have to be demolished due to the structural damage suffered in the storm. The Graves County Jail, which was attached to the Graves County Courthouse through the lower level, was a later addition, being built in 1946. The jail held approximately 108 inmates and had both male and female cells; as well as general population dorms and a protective custody dorm. Although the jail was relatively intact after the tragic tornado, it also suffered from irreversible damage from the intense winds and the water damage caused by the torrential downpour. The Graves County Jail will most likely also be demolished along side the courthouse, as they were both left tattered and torn with extensive damage, far beyond expensive to even repair.

Exploring the Graves County Courthouse and Jail was one memorable experience that we will never forget! Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the people affected by the devastating and deadly 2021 tornado. Hopefully you all enjoyed this video, as it can be emotional to watch. We truly appreciate all the continued support. For more photos of this location and others, check out abandonedcentral.com. Thank you.

Abandoned Funeral Home With Embalming Room and Caskets

March 27, 2022

This abandoned funeral home was located in Chicago, Illinois. The funeral home was built in 1939 and was an ornate Romanesque light brick and stone, two-story structure. It housed the funeral home business on the first floor and the residence upstairs on the second floor. Although the original use of the building is unclear, records indicate that it was home to a couple of different funeral home business over the years, with the last one being established in the 1990’s. The last funeral home to operate from the location was a family owned and operated business. It had a great reputation in the local area, as they were known to go “above and beyond” for the decedents, their families, and their loved ones. The funeral home specialized in traditional funeral services, cremations, grief and loss support, urn and vault selection, and veteran burial services. The funeral home was a very small business, as it only had a staff of 3 full time employees. The owner was also the funeral service director and seemed to have done most of the work himself, giving the patrons an intimate and personal experience. Unfortunately, the funeral home’s owner suddenly passed away in 2013 and the business operations were suspended. Without the beloved owner and director, the funeral home struggled to reopen and eventually was permanently closed. For more photos check out abandonedcentral.com. Thank you for all the support!

Abandoned Mansion - Family Lost Everything In Fire

March 20, 2022

This abandoned mansion that was vacated by a Jewish family after a 2018 fire broke out inside the home. This abandoned mansion was built in 1981 and was custom designed with a sort of mix of medieval and gothic architectural styles. The large home had 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and measured at over 7,000 square feet. It appears that several families moved in and out of the massive home over time. The last family to live in the enormous house was a wealthy Jewish family, whose belongings are still left inside. The fire that forced the last family out of the home, appeared to have started in the kitchen and quickly spread upstairs, damaging one of the bedrooms and hallway. Luckily the fire was extinguished before anyone was hurt and before it destroyed the entire estate.

The best part of exploring this abandoned half-burnt residence was the beautiful interior design and how much of the families belongings were actually left behind. As you walked through two twin hand carved wooden doors, into the main entrance of the mansion, you notice a large, gorgeous sweeping staircase with a bedazzled, brass chandelier hanging high above, serving as the centerpiece of the foyer. The living room, which was located right off the foyer, featured gold-trimmed plaster columns on each side of the entrance. More Intricate plaster work wrapped around the walls high above, serving as the living rooms crown molding. The living room itself was quite fascinating with many of the family’s things still set up, including opulent furniture and lavish decor. The dining room, bathrooms, and bedrooms also still had a bunch of the family’s personal effects left behind, as if they most likely had to leave in a hurry due to the raging fire. We can only guess as to why the family never returned for their possessions, but maybe they just assumed that everything was smoke and soot damaged. After the 2018 fire, the mansion was boarded up, locked up, and pretty much forgotten about. As of 2022, the custom built castle like home still sits abandoned, a mere shell of what it once was. We sure hope that someone will be able to save this once elegant home and return it to its former glory.

Abandoned Funeral Home That Left All The Caskets

March 13, 2022

This abandoned funeral home that left all the caskets behind was located in the southern United States. The funeral home was well-known in the local community and helped thousands of families celebrate the lives of their loved ones over the years. However, in more recent years the steady wave of success came crashing down on the funeral home shortly after new ownership took over operations.

The first sign that trouble was on the horizon began in 2015, when a customer complaint prompted the State Board to make an unannounced visit to the funeral home. Their job was to make sure that the customer complaint was valid and to ensure that the funeral home was “up to code.” During the State Board visit, authorities noted dirty, used embalming tools and equipment that were supposed to be sanitary. They found that the embalming room had not been cleaned for quite some time, as they went on to find undrained Bodily fluids, as well as both Bloody sheets and gowns that were not properly disposed of. One of the authorities later stated that the embalming room “resembled a slaughterhouse” so I’m sure you can imagine what it looked like. The investigation did not stop at the embalming room.

As the authorities began investigating the funeral homes records and finances, more questions quickly arose. The investigation uncovered missing financial documents, which lead to state board placing the funeral home on a 3 year probationary period. If the funeral home could show that they are following through on their commitment to “clean up their act” then they could continue to operate. If not, the funeral home would be shut down immediately. So in 2018, 3 years later, the state board set a hearing with the funeral homes owner. The purpose of this hearing was to give the funeral homes owner a chance to redeem himself, explain the unsanitary conditions and shoddy record keeping, and to resolved that initial customer complaint. Unfortunately for the funeral home, neither the owner or anyone else showed for the hearing. Instead, the owner closed down his funeral home and fled the area.

Once this happened, the state board was left with no other choice but to revoke the funeral homes permit and subsequently, the owners license. In 2019, the funeral home was permanently shuttered by the state. As of 2022, the funeral home still sits vacant, but did recently sell in an auction, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this one time successful funeral home.

Abandoned House in the Woods Full of the Family's Belongings

March 6, 2022

This abandoned house was a two-story craftsman style home that sat on 2 acres and dates back nearly 100 years. The single family home was built in 1929 and featured 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and measured at nearly 1700 square feet. The abandoned home appears to have been vacated for many years, as nearly everything inside was old and outdated. The photos and portraits that still sat on the various tables all appear to be at least 30 years old. The house has a lot roof and other structural damage, most likely from all the years of water damage and neglect, that have allowed for the natural elements to come in and take over. The exterior of the home has a look as if it’s being swallowed by the surrounding woods, as the trees and other greenery have covered the outside of the home making it almost impossible to see from the road nearby. Nature has taken over multiple antique cars that were still parked in the driveway. One car was still sitting in the covered car port, which appears that it’s about to collapse any day.

There are multiple rumors going around that this abandoned house was once lived in by notorious serial killer, Stephen Parnell, but we have not been able to debunk or prove that. This abandoned house was one of the very best that we have explored because of the history, the natural decay, and of course because everything was left behind by the family that last lived here. For more photos of this amazing abandoned house, check out the blog at abandonedcentral.com. Thank you for all your support.

The Aftermath of a Massive Tornado in Mayfield Kentucky

February 27, 2022

On December 10, 2021 an EF4 tornado, also knows as a category 4 tornado, ripped through four different states, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, and Arkansas. Unfortunately, Western Kentucky seemed to have taken the brunt of the super cell storm. The tornado ripped through and completely destroyed many cities across western Kentucky. Mayfield, a small quiet city with a population of approximately 10,000 people, got the worst of it all. The category 4 tornado had both down pouring rain and extreme winds that reached up to nearly 200 miles an hour.

Those fierce winds caused debris, including houses and vehicles, to be thrown nearly 30,000 feet into the sky, which is the same height that most jets fly. It all started on December 8th 2021 when the Storm Prediction Center announced a “high risk” for severe weather along the states near the Mississippi River Valley. Forecasters indicated that atmospheric conditions favored the development of nocturnal supercells capable of producing long-tracked, strong-winded tornadoes for that geographical region.

Two days later, on December 10, 2021 both the Storm Prediction Center and the National Weather Service issued their first of what would eventually become 149 tornado warnings for the already high risk area in the Mississippi River valley. One of the main problems for tracking these tornados, was that the supercell storm generated multiple tornados with extreme rainfall, in some cases 3-4 tornados at the same time. The first major tornado touched down on December 10, 2021 at 8:49 pm in the small town of woodland Mills, Tennessee, which was located in the northwestern corner of the state. As it moved northeast toward the Kentucky border, it had already caused significant damage to trees, power lines, and peoples homes throughout “oh buy in” Obion County, Tennessee. By the time the twister had crossed into Kentucky and reached the small community of Cayce, Kentucky it had reached Category 4 intensity, causing several buildings to collapse and even killing one person.

As the twister moved north from Cayce into Hickman County, Kentucky it had weakened to category 3, but still managed to destroy several farms in the area. From Hickman County Kentucky the storm moved northeast toward Graves County, Kentucky. It seemed to have weakened to a category 2 as it crossed into Graves County, Kentucky. Suddenly the tornado seemed to instantly gain strength and power as it paralleled Interstate 69 and headed toward mayfield, Kentucky. At 9:26 pm, the National Weather Service announced a tornado emergency for the City of Mayfield, as the now massive tornado had again reached category 4 strength, had touched down, and was headed straight for Mayfield. Within minutes, peoples homes were leveled and swept from their foundations. Trees in this area were stripped and debarked, power lines were knocked to the ground, cars were thrown, and mobile homes were completely obliterated.

Even large semi-trucks, tankers, and other heavy industrial vehicles were thrown and destroyed as well, some of which were left unrecognizable. The most tragic of the storm’s devastation was when it collapsed a large candle factory, known as Mayfield Consumer Products. The giant metal warehouse completely collapsed and was flattened to the ground, trapping approximately 110 employees working inside the factory. Initially it was feared that most of the employees were dead, but search and rescue teams were able to save most of them. In the end, 8 employees had tragically lost their lives. Allegedly, the employees wanted to leave, but couldn’t as their jobs were threatened if they left the factory.

American Legion Theatre Tornado Damage

After the tornado destroyed the candle factory, it intensified even further, nearly reaching category 5 intensity as it tore directly through the center of town, resulting in widespread, catastrophic damage throughout the historic downtown square of Mayfield. Most of the structures in downtown Mayfield were heavily damaged and destroyed, including multiple large, well-built, multi-story brick buildings that completely collapsed. Only large piles of bricks and lumber remained in the hardest-hit portions of the downtown area, and vehicles and streets were left buried under debris. As the twister moved out of downtown mayfield, it screamed like a freight train almost as if it was angrier then ever. On its way out of town, it ripped and mangled the residential neighborhoods toppling approximately 15,000 residential homes.

When it was all over with, the drastic and lethal tornado had been one of the deadliest tornados in recoded in recent history, with a final death toll of 58. It’s path was also the 9th longest in history measuring at approximately 165 miles and lasting nearly 3 hours.
